A segment groups your data so you can compare them in charts. Define a segment once, then use it like any other dimension.

> **Note:** Segments are gated behind the Segments feature flag. If you don't see the Create a Segment option, it isn't enabled on your account yet.

## Create from a description

1. Open the Create a Segment dialog.
2. Give the segment a name (for example, "High-Value Customers").
3. In "Describe who belongs in this segment", write the rule in plain English.
4. Click Create from description.

Golden parses the description against your dataset's columns and proposes one or more groups. If it isn't sure, you'll see a warning explaining what to adjust.

## Build by hand

You can also build segments using a template or by adding groups manually. Each group is a set of conditions joined by AND or OR. Rows that don't match any group fall into a fallback bucket - by default labelled "Other".

> **Tip:** Once a segment exists, you can drag it onto Color or Trellis to compare the groups side by side in any chart.
