What is AI-native BI?
AI-native BI is business intelligence software designed around AI from the start, so the AI and the person are peers. Both can build and change the same analysis, both actions run through the same validated logic, and the user decides how much the AI does. In AI-added BI, the AI advises and the human still does the work. In chat-first tools, a chat box is the whole product.
One question tells them apart: what happens if you remove the AI?
If you remove the AI and the product works the same way, just less conveniently, the AI was added on top. The interaction model (building measures, dragging fields into visuals, publishing dashboards) was designed before AI arrived. If you remove the AI and the product no longer makes sense, AI is part of the architecture. That's the difference between AI as a feature and AI as a foundation.
AI-native, agentic and conversational BI: what's the difference?
- Conversational BI is a natural-language interface on top of data: you ask, it answers. It describes the interface, not the architecture.
- Agentic analytics means AI agents that take a goal and carry out multi-step work, such as running several queries and writing a report. It describes how much the AI does on its own.
- AI-native BI describes how the product is built: AI and people act on the same objects through the same logic. An AI-native product can be conversational and agentic when you want it to be, and hands-on when you don't.
What makes BI AI-native: four traits
Industry analysts are starting to draw the same line. FERRARO Consulting's 2026 report, The Seven Principles of Agentic Analytics by John Santaferraro (sponsored by Golden), separates AI-first architectures from "legacy providers that have tacked on chatbots or copilots to existing products." Four of its principles map closely to what AI-native BI should mean:
- AI at the core. The AI works across the whole lifecycle, from the moment data connects to the moment insight is shared, not in a side panel. FERRARO calls AI "the connective tissue and the brain" of the analytical lifecycle.
- People in control. The person decides how much or how little the AI does, and stays in the loop wherever they want to confirm or validate.
- Conversation as one modality. In FERRARO's words, "Conversational analytics does not replace visualizations, dashboards, or even reports." Chat is where many people start; visuals, dashboards and stories are where the answer becomes clear and shareable.
- Trust you can check. FERRARO's bar: "Every generated insight must cite source data, transformation, calculations, and confidence levels." Look for validation at three levels: built-in system checks, review by the person asking, and review by colleagues.
The full framework covers seven principles. Our guide How to choose an AI-native analytics solution turns them into questions to ask vendors.
How Golden applies this: the slider of autonomy and an agent-data firewall
In Golden, a slider of autonomy sets how much the AI does: You Drive (you build, the AI stays out of the way), AI Assist (suggestions, calculations from plain language, chart reviews) and AI Creates (you describe a dashboard or story and Golden builds a first version you keep editing). AI agents never do the math: they work through a deterministic query and calculation engine, and editors can inspect and edit the SQL behind every chart. See how Golden is built to be AI-native.
Eight questions to ask any "AI-native" BI vendor
- 01If you turned the AI off, would the product still work the same way?
- 02Can the AI make the same changes a user can, through the same logic, or does it only suggest?
- 03Can you edit one detail of an AI-built dashboard without re-prompting the whole thing?
- 04Can you see and edit the query and calculation behind every AI answer?
- 05Does every AI answer show its source data, calculation and query, and can you check it with colleagues?
- 06Can you work in chat, in visuals and dashboards, or both, in one workspace?
- 07Does the AI see your raw data, or only schema, statistics and samples? Is your data used for training?
- 08What does one more question cost: included, credits, tokens or capacity?
Golden Analytics has the right balance of vibe coding while allowing the analyst to maintain control and still use UI gestures when they make sense. It makes it really easy to be “in the zone” of analysis.

AI-native BI: common questions
What does AI-native BI mean?
AI-native BI is business intelligence software designed around AI from the start. The AI and the user are peers: both can build and change the same analysis, both actions run through the same validated logic, and the user decides how much the AI does. A quick test: if removing the AI leaves the product basically unchanged, the AI was added on top.
What's the difference between AI-native BI and AI added to BI, like Copilot?
In AI-added BI, the AI advises and the human still does the work in the classic builder; remove the AI and the product is the same. In AI-native BI, the AI can build and edit the same dashboards and analyses the user can, through the same logic, so you can switch between typing and clicking without losing coherence.
Is AI-native BI the same as agentic analytics?
No. Agentic analytics describes AI agents that carry out multi-step tasks on their own. AI-native describes how the product is built. An AI-native tool can act agentically when you want it to, for example drafting a full dashboard, and step back when you want to drive.
Is a chatbot on top of a BI tool AI-native?
Not by itself. A chat interface describes how you ask, not how the product is built. FERRARO Consulting's 2026 report on agentic analytics treats conversation as "one modality of the full analytical experience," alongside visuals, dashboards, reports and stories. If the product works the same with the chatbot removed, the AI was added on top.
What are the seven principles of agentic analytics?
They come from The Seven Principles of Agentic Analytics, a 2026 FERRARO Consulting report by John Santaferraro: put people at the center; place AI at the core; put agentic analytics at the center of every AI application; deploy agents across the whole analytics lifecycle; treat conversation as one modality; build trust through governance, transparency and validation; and support continuous learning for people and AI.
How do I know an AI-generated number is right?
Check how you'd verify it. In Golden, editors can inspect and edit the query and calculation behind every chart, and changes made by AI and by clicks run through the same validated logic, so the chart on screen is the chart the query produced. Queries run live in your warehouse under your permissions.
Does AI-native BI replace analysts?
No. It removes the busywork around analysis, like cleaning data, rebuilding reports and wiring charts, so analysts spend more time on the question and the judgment. In Golden, the analyst decides how much the AI does and can review and edit everything it produces.
