Chat with your data
Ask questions about the loaded dataset in a chat dialog — get plain-language answers, charts, and step-by-step help drawn from the Golden docs.
Chat with your data helps you explore your dataset through conversation. Ask questions in plain English to get summaries, trends, and charts. You can analyze specific metrics, compare categories, or ask for a breakdown of your data.

Open the chat
- On the Discover screen, click Chat with your data in the Dataset Summary header. This opens the chat window over your analysis.
- From Explore, in the list view, open a dataset's row menu and choose Chat. Golden loads the dataset and opens the standalone "Chat with your data" page.
- Or open the command palette (Cmd K or Ctrl K) in an analysis and run "Chat with this data".
- Either way you need a dataset loaded — the composer stays disabled until there is one.
Asking questions
Type your question into the box and press Enter. Golden provides an answer and often generates a chart. You can refine your results with follow-up questions. Ask for a different chart type, filter by a specific date range, or request a deeper breakdown of a metric. The chat remembers the context of your previous queries, so you can build on your analysis step by step.
- "Show me the total revenue by region."
- "What is the average growth rate over the last quarter?"
- "Compare the performance of Product A and Product B."
- "Which category has the highest customer churn?"
The standalone chat page
The page is headed "Chat with your data" with the dataset name underneath. If you open it with no dataset loaded, the "Connect your data" dialog appears first, with Upload files, Sample datasets, and Shared datasets to choose from. Before your first question you get a few "Suggested visualizations" and "Or try these questions" to start from.
- Change dataset - the folder icon in the toolbar reopens "Connect your data" so you can switch to another dataset.
- Clear chat - the trash icon empties the current conversation.
- Export - the download icon offers Copy to Clipboard, Export as PNG, and Export as PDF for the transcript.
- Chat history - the sidebar on the left lists earlier chats. Start a fresh one with New Chat, and use a chat's menu to Star, Rename, or delete it.
The chat window in an analysis
The chat window opens large, with the conversation on the left and a wide pane on the right for what the chat is working on. Drag the divider to give either side more room. The header holds Chat history (with New Chat, Previous Chats and Clear all history), export, Clear chat, a toggle between Compact view and Expanded view, and Close.
Across the top of the expanded window, a switch picks what the right pane is for.
- Discover - a reading view of the dataset: its summary, quick insights, "Suggested explorations" and key questions. Pick a suggestion and the chart builds straight away, and the window switches to Analyze so you can see it. Sending a message from Discover also moves you to Analyze.
- Analyze - the chart tray. Each chart the chat makes appears here, and you can keep refining it by asking follow-ups.
- Communicate - a dashboard the conversation builds into. The first time, Golden asks "Which dashboard?" so you can pick an existing dashboard or click New dashboard. Charts and edits from this chat then go there. Open takes you to the full dashboard editor, and Back to Analyze leaves the mode.
Work with the chart tray
A new answer does not replace the last chart. Every chart from the conversation stays in the tray, and a strip above the chart lets you step between them with Previous chart and Next chart, pick one by name, Rename chart, or remove one from the conversation's charts.
- Fields - opens a rail beside the chart with a chart type picker and the same field shelves a dashboard chart uses. Edits here change the chart itself. Click Hide fields to close it.
- Sort - a one-click toggle between highest first, lowest first, and clearing the sort.
- Filter - the filter control from dashboards, with a plain-English line saying what the chart is currently showing and an "Or ask" box for describing a filter change in words, such as only 2024.
- The + menu - Add this chart to dashboard, Add all charts to dashboard (when there is more than one), Open this chart in Analyze, or Add this chart to a new slide, depending on what the chart and the analysis can accept.
Undo a change
When a reply changed a chart, it carries an Undo button. Once you use it, the same button turns into Redo, so it always tells you which state the chart is in. Inside the chat window, Cmd Z (Ctrl Z) undoes and Cmd Shift Z or Cmd Y redoes.
Write a question
- Type / to open an action menu - explain, chart, filter and similar commands for what is on screen. Some run as soon as you pick them, others drop editable text into the box.
- Type @ to pick a field by name from the full field list.
- As you type, a faded suggestion may complete your question. Press Tab to accept it a word at a time, or the Right arrow key (or click "all") to take the whole thing.
- While an answer is being written, the send button becomes Stop generating. Stopping keeps the partial answer, marks it Stopped, and puts your question back in the box so you can edit and resend it.
Copy an answer or a snippet
Every finished answer carries Copy, Good response and Bad response buttons, and clicking the thumbs you already chose clears it. Your own questions show a Copy button when you hover over them, and every fenced code block in an answer — a SQL snippet, for example — has its own Copy button that takes just the code without the surrounding text. You can also select and copy any part of a message by hand.
When the chat hands off
A request for a whole dashboard, several charts laid out as one board, is built in Communicate rather than as loose charts in the chat. Golden says "Taking you to Communicate to build that dashboard now.", opens a new dashboard, takes you there and builds it. A request for a single chart is built in the chat as usual.
The Result note
After the chat draws a chart, Golden checks what actually rendered. If a chart came back empty, for example because a filter value did not match anything in the data, or failed to draw, a small red note labeled Result appears in the transcript saying what happened. The AI then gets one follow-up turn to fix it, so the next reply is usually the corrected chart.
How-to answers from the docs
If you ask how to do something in Golden rather than a question about your data, the chat answers from the published help center. The reply carries a help chip you can click to open the relevant article in the help drawer, and — when the task has a place in the app — a "Go to" button that takes you straight there.
History and exporting
Start a fresh conversation with New Chat, and reopen an earlier one from the chat history menu. The export menu lets you take a conversation out of the dialog. You can also expand the dialog to a larger view when a chart needs more room.
