Filter a dashboard with slicers
Add filter chips or on-canvas slicer cards, choose how they look, decide which cards they drive, flip a selection from include to exclude, and read the empty-tile state when a filter leaves a chart with no rows.
A chart filter in Analyze narrows one chart. A dashboard filter narrows a whole board at once. It comes in two forms - a compact chip in the filter bar along the top, and a slicer card that sits on the canvas as part of the design.
Add a filter
- Open the dashboard in Communicate.
- Use the toolbar to "Show filter bar" if it is hidden - a dot marks the bar when filters are already active.
- Click "+ Add" in the filter bar and pick a field, or right-click the canvas and choose "Add Filter" to place a slicer card.
- Golden confirms with "Filter added" and the field name.
Slicer styles
Select a slicer and the Filter section of the properties panel offers a Style choice. Which styles are available depends on the field type: text and boolean fields get List, Dropdown, and Buttons; numbers add Range; dates add Range and Calendar. New slicers default to Range for numbers and dates and List for everything else.
- Title - the heading on the card, with a Show title switch.
- Selection - Single or Multi. New slicers are multi-select.
- Size - Comfortable or Compact.
- Show search, Show counts and Selection toggle - on by default.
- Select all button and Apply button - off by default. Apply mode holds your changes until you click Apply, instead of re-querying on every click.
Choosing which cards a slicer drives
At the bottom of the same pane, "Applies to" decides the slicer's reach. "All visuals" is the default. Switch to "Specific" and you get a checkbox list of the other cards on the board by title. Uncheck the last one and it snaps back to All visuals rather than becoming a filter that drives nothing.
Include or exclude
Categorical filters carry an Include / Exclude toggle at the top of the popover, above the search box. Include is the default and keeps what you check. Switch to Exclude and the same checkboxes mean the opposite - the rows you check are the rows removed, shown struck through in the list.
- No selection reads "All".
- One excluded value reads like "Not Newsletter".
- Several excluded values read "Excluding 2".
- Several included values read "2 selected".
Date filters and period sets
A date filter in the dashboard header reads "Period:" followed by a summary of the current selection, and opens the same Range, Buckets, and Relative tabs you get in Analyze. Relative offers 7d, 30d, 90d, 6mo and 12mo chips plus This week, This month, This quarter and This year, and a custom row in days, weeks, months, quarters or years.
Picking individual periods instead of a range produces a period set. Its editor carries a Level dropdown and a Mode dropdown with Include and Exclude, and shows a running count like "Keeping 3 periods" or "Excluding 1 period". KPI and metric cards honor a period set the same way charts do.
When a tile shows no data
When a filter leaves a tile with nothing to draw, it reads "No data available" and "No rows match the current filters.", then lists the filters in play in two groups - Chart filters, which belong to that tile alone, and Dashboard filters, which come from the board. The filter that most likely emptied the tile - one that shares no values with the other group on the same field - is shown first and in bold red.
Two buttons sit under the list. Edit chart filters opens that tile's own Chart filters (the filter bar when you are in Analyze), and Clear dashboard filters removes the board's filters. Fixing or clearing the filter shown in red is usually enough to bring the tile back.
