Use a visual calculation

Turn a measure into a running total, a share of total, a moving average, a rank, a difference, or a percentage change - compare a period with the same one a year earlier - and choose the group the calculation resets within.

A visual calculation transforms a measure after it has been aggregated, on the chart. Unlike a calculated field, it does not create a new column - it changes what the existing measure draws, so it is a one-click experiment rather than a change to your data.

Apply one

  1. Click the measure's pill on the shelf to open its menu.
  2. Find the "Visual Calculation" section.
  3. Click a calculation to apply it as-is, or open its submenu to set its options first.

The calculations

  • None - remove the calculation and show the plain measure.
  • Running Total - a cumulative sum across the axis.
  • % of Total - each value as a share of the total.
  • Moving Average - a smoothed line, with a Period of 3, 7, 14, or 30.
  • Rank - position rather than value.
  • Difference - the change from one point to the next.
  • % Change - the percentage change from one point to the next.

Compare with a year earlier

When your chart's date axis is grouped by month or quarter, the Difference and % Change rows gain a Period submenu. Pick the axis's own grain - Month or Quarter - to compare each point with the one before it, or pick Year to compare it with the same period a year earlier, which is the year-over-year view. The pill then reads "YoY % Change" or "YoY Difference", and a period with nothing a year earlier comes back blank rather than as a full change. On a yearly axis there is nothing to pick, because the previous point already is a year earlier.

Compute within

This is the control that decides what the number actually means. "Compute within" chooses the group the calculation restarts inside: "All data", or any of the chart's grouping fields.

A % of Total computed within All data tells you each bar's share of the grand total. The same calculation computed within Category tells you each bar's share of its own category, so every category's bars sum to 100%. Both are legitimate; only one answers the question you had.

Note: The options list only the fields that are actually grouping the chart - an axis or trellis field. The color field is deliberately left out. If you ask for a scope that is not on the chart, Golden tells you to add it to an axis or trellis first.
Tip: Hover the measure pill to read back what is applied - the tooltip spells out the calculation and its scope together, which is the quickest way to catch a share computed against the wrong denominator.
Heads up: A Running Total, Difference, or % Change depends on the order of the axis. Re-sorting the chart changes the numbers, not just their arrangement, so check the sort before reading a cumulative line.
