Comments and annotations

1 min readUpdated May 27, 2026

Golden does not have a free-form comment thread on analyses or dashboards today. The way to leave context on a chart is to use chart annotations.

Chart annotations

Annotations are small text callouts you anchor to a specific bar, point, or coordinate on a chart. They travel with the visualization so anyone opening the analysis sees the same notes in the same place.

  • Anchor to a data point (a specific bar or category) so the annotation follows that point if the chart updates.
  • Anchor to coordinates on the chart for free-form positioning.
  • Style the background color, text color, font size, and leader line.

Field annotations in Catalog

In the Catalog, you can attach a note, warning, or definition to a column on a dataset. These show up next to the field so future readers know how it should be used.

Note: A general comment thread on analyses, dashboards, and data stories is not built yet. Use chart annotations for in-product notes, or share a link and use Slack or email for back-and-forth discussion.
