Build an interval plot

Show an estimate as a dot with a whisker running from its low to its high bound, one interval per category, so uncertainty and ranges read at a glance.

An interval plot draws an estimate as a dot, with a whisker stretching from a low value to a high value. Use it for anything with a range around it - a forecast with its confidence bounds, a price with its minimum and maximum, a survey score with its margin of error. Pick Interval Plot from the chart type selector - it sits with the horizontal bar charts.

Fill the role shelves

Each part of the interval has its own shelf, so the order you drop fields in doesn't matter. Only Estimate is required; with no Category you get a single interval.

ShelfWhat it holds
EstimateThe measure drawn as the dot.
LowOptional. The lower bound, where the whisker starts.
HighOptional. The upper bound, where the whisker ends.
CategoryOptional. One interval per member.
ColorOptional. Tints the dot and whisker.
TooltipOptional. Extra fields to show on hover.
  1. Pick Interval Plot from the chart type selector.
  2. Drag the measure you're estimating to Estimate.
  3. Drag the bound measures to Low and High.
  4. Drag a dimension to Category to get one interval per member.
Tip: Need a range bar instead, where the bar itself spans low to high? Use Range Bar. An interval plot keeps the focus on the estimate and treats the range as context.

Format an interval plot

Open the format pane and find Interval plot options:

  • Dot size and Whisker width set how heavy the marks are.
  • End caps adds a short bar at each end of the whisker.
  • Reference line draws a line across the value axis at Zero, at the Average estimate, or at a Custom value you type.
  • Under Data labels, Label shows picks whether each dot is labeled with just the estimate or with the estimate and its range.

The dot and whisker color lives in the Color section, like any other chart.

Build it from the chat

You can ask the Analyst pane or a dashboard's Storyteller pane for one in plain words - "plot forecast revenue by region with its low and high estimates" - and Golden fills the shelves for you. Interval plots work the same way in Analyze and on dashboards.
