Filter by distance

Keep only the rows within - or beyond - a radius of a place, a coordinate pair, or the rows of another table, described in plain language or set by hand.

If your data has coordinates, Golden can filter by how far each row is from somewhere. That covers the questions a value filter cannot answer - customers within an hour of a depot, stores beyond a competitor's catchment, incidents inside a radius.

Add a distance filter

  1. Click "Add filter" above the chart.
  2. Switch to the Distance tab, alongside Value and Top / Bottom.
  3. If the dataset has one coordinate pair, the filter is created straight away. With several tables, pick the table to measure from.
  4. Describe what you want, or open Manual to set it by hand.
Note: The Distance tab only appears when the dataset actually has coordinates, and a chart holds one distance filter at a time - clicking Distance again reopens the existing one rather than stacking another.

Describe it in plain language

The first thing in the filter is a text box, prompting with "e.g. within 100 miles of Chicago". It takes the whole request at once - a direction, a distance, a unit, and a place. If it cannot parse what you typed it says so and shows examples: "within 100 miles of Chicago", "within 50km", "further than 15 miles from a store".

When a place name could mean several places, Golden asks "Which one?" and lists the candidates instead of guessing.

Set it by hand

Open the Manual disclosure and you choose the center three ways.

  • Place - type a place name, prompted with "e.g. Chicago".
  • Coordinates - enter Latitude and Longitude directly.
  • Table - measure to the rows of another table, "every store, say - not to your own location".

Below the center, a toggle picks the direction - "Inside radius" or "Outside radius" - and a number and unit set the distance. Units are miles, km, and meters. A new distance filter starts at 50 miles measured from a place.

Reading the filter chip

  • within 100 mi of Chicago - inside a radius of a named place.
  • further than 15 mi from a store - outside a radius of another table's rows.
  • 50 mi - no center yet - the distance is set but Golden still needs somewhere to measure from.
  • (All) - the filter exists but is not narrowing anything.
Heads up: Measuring to another table's rows only works on imported datasets, and needs a second table that has coordinates of its own. Golden says so rather than failing quietly, and points you at Place or Coordinates instead.
Tip: "Outside radius" is the underused half. Asking which rows fall beyond a catchment is often a sharper question than asking which fall inside it.
