Build a range bar chart
Show a low-to-high range per category as a floating bar or a dumbbell, with an optional marker for the actual value.
A range bar chart shows where each category starts and ends. Each bar floats from a low value to a high value, like a price range, a budget band or a before-and-after pair. A third measure can add a marker inside the range. Pick Range Bar from the chart type selector - it sits with the horizontal bar charts.
Fill the shelves
| Shelf | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Measures | Two or three measures, in order: the low bound, the high bound, and an optional marker such as the actual value. |
| Category | The categories, one range each. |
| Color | Optional. A dimension groups the ranges. |
| Tooltip | Optional. Extra fields to show on hover. |
- Pick Range Bar from the chart type selector.
- Drag the low-bound measure to Measures, then the high-bound measure after it.
- Optionally drag a third measure to Measures for a marker.
- Drag a dimension to Category.
Format a range bar chart
Open the format pane and find Range bar options.
- Style switches between Bar and Dumbbell. Dumbbell draws a dot at each end joined by a line.
- Dot size and Line width set the dumbbell's dots and connecting line.
- Value labels shows the value beside each dumbbell end.
- Gap label shows the distance between the two ends. Gap format picks Percentage or Absolute.
- Neutral line draws a vertical line at the Value you type, such as 3 on a 1 to 5 scale.
Dot size, Line width, Value labels and Gap label only appear with the Dumbbell style.
Build one from the chat
Ask the Analyst pane, or a dashboard's Storyteller pane, for a range bar or dumbbell chart. It needs two measures it can use as the low and high bounds, so name them if your data has several. It works the same way in Analyze and on dashboards.
